Signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music, Big Sean is one of the first rappers from Detroit to make it big without Eminem's influence. In the mid-1990s, Eminem became Detroit's most popular rappers. His street albums were highly popular and caught the attention of Dr. Dre, leading to Shady/Aftermath.
For twelve years, Eminem has been one of the most-dominating forces in hip hop. Rappers from the Detroit area usually get in contact with Eminem in order to get on. Aside from his own D12 crew, Em has worked with Obie Trice and Royce Da 5'9. Not many Detroit rappers have made it big without Eminem.
Big Sean is currently the focal point of G.O.O.D. Music. While he has yet to become a major star, Big Sean is off to a good start. Recording with Chris Brown has made "My Last" into a summer smash. With his debut album released this week, the pressure is on Big Sean, but he does not feel it. Instead, he plans to continue doing things his own way.
Being the first major Detroit artist to make it, basically on his own, since Eminem, Big Sean has plans of changing the way people think of Detroit hip hop. Big Sean said everything he does is for his home city, but he wants to show fans a different side of Detroit hip hop, instead of the style Eminem portrays.
