In 2009, newer artists from the West Coast began to emerge. Kendrick Lamar immediately stuck out among those names. Other names to emerge during this period of time were Jay Rock and the infamous Tyler, the Creator.

Last year, Kendrick Lamar began working with several big names. During this period of time, he formed strong relationships with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, West Coast legends. Despite working with the legends, Kendrick Lamar remains solo.

Kendrick Lamar has been signed to independent label, Top Dawg Entertainment, ever since the release of his mixtape, Young Head Nigga in Charge. As his profile begins to boost, Kendrick Lamar has caught the attention of major record labels. In spite of this, Kendrick Lamar has no plans of leaving his label. Instead, he plans to continue recording his music and releasing his albums with Top Dawg. For him to even consider signing with a major label, Kendrick Lamar said the situation has to be right.

The rising West Coast rapper also discussed his Compton upbringing. Kendrick Lamar said growing up in the city of Ruthless Records did a lot in influencing him. To Kendrick Lamar, he feels he has to first captivate his home town before he thinks of going forward with his career.
