Common enlists Maya Angelou for "The Dreamer, The Believer"

For his latest album, The Dreamer, The Believer, Common has gone all out. Hip hop heads wished, for years, to hear Common and Nas on the same track. The two made this happen with their collaboration, "Ghetto Dreams." Their track will be a part of the upcoming album.
Fans were excited about the collaboration between Common and Nas, but it has nothing on his next collaboration. Known as a rapper who talks about the issues, Common is all about raising awareness. Despite being a rapper, many classify his music as poetry.
Several Common fans consider him a poet and he is giving those fans a treat. Common has recruited the legendary poet, Maya Angelou, for his new album. He met Maya Angelou at a benefit he was doing for a foundation. Common said meeting Angelou was incredible. The poet who was supposed to come to the benefit did not show up, so his team contacted Maya Angelou and she agreed to do it, since then she and Common have been friends. Read more...

Common talks Role on new AMC series and working with No I.D.

Recently, Common returned to the headlines. This spring, a track from Common, featuring Nas, called "Ghetto Dreams," leaked to the internet. Hip hop heads have been waiting on a collaboration between the two legendary rappers for well over a decade. During this time, Common has gone from just being a rapper to also becoming an actor.
Common is currently gearing up for his latest album, The Dreamer, The Believer. His "Blue Sky" single premiered on the radio yesterday and has been shared on the internet. Providing production on Common's latest album will be No I.D. Over the summer, he landed an executive role with Def Jam. Now, he is going back to work with Common.
Working with No I.D. for so long, Common said it is good to still work with someone like him. The reason Common said this was because he and No I.D. first entered the game together. Nearly twenty years later, Common is regarded as one of the best rappers in the game and No I.D. is regarded as one of the best producers in the game, along with being a record executive. Common said the two have always had great chemistry when they worked together.
Outside of music, Common will still be shown on the screen, this time, however, it will be the small screen. Common will have a role in the upcoming AMC series, "Hell on Wheels." Common is a "New York Times" best seller

Hip hop is evolving and 2011 has been a transitional year for the genre. While many new rappers have debuted new albums, the veterans have been releasing books. Common recently released his memoirs, One Day It'll All Make Sense.
Throughout his career, Common has released several albums and he waited for them to debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Now an author, Common waited for his book to debut on the New York Times best sellers' list.
Common's book debuted at number twenty on the New York Times best sellers list. After Common discovered the sales of his book and the top twenty debut, he took the time to thank his fans.

Common says Nas is his Favorite Rapper

Hip hop heads around the world were excited when they learned of Common and Nas recording together. Both rappers are considered two of the most-lyrical in the game. Earlier this year, they came together for "Ghetto Dreams."
During a recent interview, Common was asked who his favorite rapper is. Common said Nas is his favorite rapper, because his lyrics will stand the test of time. While he cited Nas, Common said many would argue Jay-Z is the best.
Common said the reason he picks Nas as his favorite rapper is because his lyrics are more poetic. With Nas' lyrics, Common feels they can be written down and will be relevant years from now. He feels Nas' work can be literature. Read more...

Common discusses "One Day It'll All Make Sense" book

A number of rappers are not only releasing new music, they are also releasing literature. Among the rappers writing books is Common. His book is titled One Day It'll All Make Sense. Common talked about his new book with the Chicago Sun-Times.
Talking about the plot of the book, Common explains it as the evolution of a young man growing into manhood. Common said the book is about love, on different levels, not just romantic. The book, obviously, is centered in Chicago, Common's hometown, which goes hand-in-hand with his life.
Many have placed Common in a box, as being a socially-concious rapper. In his book, Common says people see a different side of him. While he speaks on the issues, Common says he has the rough and gritty stories to tell, also. Because of the way he raps, many fans do not think of the usually-positive Common in this type of light.
Growing up in Chicago, Common admits to taking part in fights, among other things. But, as a man, he takes responsibility for all the things he has done in his life, good and bad. Read more...

Nas writing "It Ain't Hard to Tell" memoirs

While working on Life is Good, Nas has other projects in the works. Aside from the new music, Nas is ready to have his words written for the world to read. Nas has jumped into the book frenzy, working on his It Ain't Hard to Tell memoirs.
Nas will be working with Toure on the book. The book will be published by HarperCollins, who announced Toure would be working with him. There has not been any other news released about the book.
Other artists who have penned books include Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Jadakiss, Common, and Foxy Brown. Nas joins a smaller crowd of rappers who have written biographies. Read more...

Common reflects on recording "Be"

With his performance at the 2011 Rock the Bells Festival, Common will be performing his 2005 album, Be. The album was considered by many as one of the best hip hop albums of the year. Having been away from the game for a while, Be was a great comeback for Common.
In 2004, Common teamed up with Kanye West, joining his newly-established G.O.O.D. Music. Immediately, the two began working on the album. Common said their work led to the first song from the album, "The Food." Even before he was given a budget, Common began recording Be.
Upon finally recording music, Kanye West played a beat he had for another artist. Common liked the beat so much Kanye West decided to give it to him. This beat ended up being the instrumental to "The Food." Read more...

No I.D. named Def Jam executive VP

Known for producing hits for Kanye West, Common, and Jay-Z, only to name a few, No I.D. has taken on a bigger role. Since Jay-Z's 2008 departure from Def Jam, the label has been reconstructing. Currently, their biggest stars are Kanye West and Rick Ross.
With L.A. Reid leaving Def Jam earlier this year, the label needs more front-office people. Last night, No I.D. announced he was a new executive VP for Def Jam. Of course this went unnoticed with all of the attention on the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
Speaking on his VP role with the company, No I.D. said he will continue to do what he does. However, now he has the backing of Def Jam. No I.D. said Def Jam is the staple of the culture he has been a part of for the past twenty years. Consequence disses Pusha T on "The Plagurist Society," says Kanye West is Next

The early days of G.O.O.D. Music were headlined by releases from the likes of Common, John Legend, and Consequence. Kanye West made a name for himself as the most-unique rapper in the game. His record label was a roster full of misfits, which is what made them successful.
Kanye West became more focused on G.O.O.D. Music when his longtime label, Roc-A-Fella Records, folded. West began searching for additional talent and developing them. Among the new artists signed during this period was Big Sean. Last summer, Pusha T was also added to the roster.
The addition of Pusha T is what would push Consequence over the edge. Cons made it clear he had issues with Pusha T, despite Pusha having no issues with him. Acknowledging their past friendship, Consequence said his lyrics were stolen by Pusha T. Despite the accusations, Pusha T denied them and said he and Cons were still friends. This led to Consequence announcing his departure from G.O.O.D. Music and Kanye West denying it.
Consequence said he was going to lead a lyrical assault against G.O.O.D. Music. Yesterday, the first diss record, "The Plagurist Society" was released. In the song, he questions Pusha T's cocaine dealer lines and rapped of his background in New York City. Kanye West signs New Deal with Def Jam for G.O.O.D. Music

Earlier today, Kanye West made a power play. For years, West has been the head of G.O.O.D. Music. Initially, he created the label for artists he had produced for. G.O.O.D. Music had released all of his albums through Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. But, following the official end of the label, Kanye West moved into the main Def Jam label.
The current artists on G.O.O.D. Music have distribution deals with various labels. Common was one of the longest-running artists on the label, releasing his music through Geffen Records. However, Common recently signed with Warner Bros. Records, leaving both G.O.O.D. and the Geffen label.
When Big Sean signed with G.O.O.D. Music, he was signed to a distribution deal with Def Jam. Following Big Sean's success, early on, and Kanye's history, West decided to bring the entire G.O.O.D. Music roster over to Def Jam. The first artist to release an album under this new, exclusive deal with Def Jam will be newcomer, Big Sean, who is currently buzzing with his "My Last" single.
