When Jay-Z purchased a minority stake in the New Jersey Nets, he immediately prepared to move them to Brooklyn. The team was supposed to move during the fall of 2010. However, the arena was not completed in time. The past few years have been full of changes for the NBA.
The Seattle SuperSonics became the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Memphis Grizzlies became playoff contenders. In addition to the team changes, LeBron James left his longtime team, the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat. Several stars have changed teams, including the Nets' former big three.
Jason Kidd, the Nets' former leader, recently celebrated winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks. Richard Jefferson recently endured much embarrassment with the San Antonio Spurs losing in the first round of the playoffs, despite having the top seed in the West. Vince Carter plays for the stangnat Phoenix Suns.
The Nets, on the other hand, were left in shambles. One year after being the NBA's worst teams, the Nets were very energetic and entertaining. However, they were not good enough to produce a season worthy of a playoff appearance. Still, the team has the right foundation to become one of the bright spots of the NBA, if they have a season this upcoming year. Regardless of the season, when the Nets take the floor again, they will be in Brooklyn.
Along with the move will come a long-overdue brand re-design. Jay-Z is rumored to be working with Addidas on the new jerseys for the team. The hip hop CEO is also rumored to be helping with the re-design of the logo. When the new arena opens next year, Jay-Z will perform an eight-concert series.
