By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Three of the biggest crews in hip hop during the late 1990s were from the Big Apple. Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records, Fat Joe's Terror Squad, and Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad. Busta maintained good relationships with both crews. But, there was never much love between Roc-A-Fella and Terror Squad.

For years, there have been rumors of Jay-Z and Big Pun getting into an altercation at a New York club. Rumors suggest Pun ended up hitting Jay-Z over the head with a bottle. While he has never spoken on it directly, rumors also say Jay-Z has subliminally dissed Fat Joe and Terror Squad several times.

In 2008, Jay-Z and Fat Joe officially ended their "beef" with the help of Swizz Beatz. Older and wiser, Busta Rhymes is providing insight to what happeend that night. Busta said he visited Roxy and when he got there, his "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" was playing repeatedly. It surprised Busta on how much love it received, but this surprise ended when a fight nearly broke out between the Roc and TS.

The fight was ended when Kid Kapri decided to play Busta Rhymes' hit yet another time.

Currently, Lloyd Banks is promoting the latest single from his comeback album, Hunger for More 2 (H.F.M.). The album has helped revive G-Unit Records. Most importantly, it has helped establish Lloyd Banks in the mainstream without the help of 50 Cent.

Following four successful singles, Banks is preparing for the release of his fifth single, "So Forgetful." Teaming up, again, with Ryan Leslie, the song touches the topic of getting drunk and waking up hungover. Lloyd Banks said the song was inspired by the 2009 comedy film, The Hangover.

Rick Ross labels himself Unstoppable

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Despite taking several hits throughout his career, Rick Ross is still one of the most-popular rappers in the game. He has portrayed the role of a "boss" for several years. In 2008, he released his hit single, "The Boss." Following the release of that song, it was revealed Ross had prior employment as a correctional officer.

Even with the label of a cop, Rick Ross went on to become one of rap's most dominating figures. Less than a year later, Ross went head-to-head with 50 Cent and won. This came after 50 Cent took a picture with Ross' son and dated his baby's mother. In the end, Ross befriended 50's best friend, Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Looking back on all of his accomplishments, Rick Ross describes it all in one word, unstoppable. Ross has been a mainstream figure for five years. While still signed to Def Jam, a bidding war between three record labels took place over him. Rick Ross said all of this proves he is unstoppable. No matter what is said about him, his songs continue to receive radio play and his albums still sell.

Birdman discusses "Bigger Than Life" and Cash Money takeover

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Birdman has reached a level of success that no other hip hop executive has enjoyed. In 1992, he launched Cash Money Records and the label was very big on the local scene. But, things changed for the New Orleans-based label in 1997 when they landed a distribution deal with Universal Records.

With backing from Universal Records, Cash Money took over the entire hip hop game in the late 1990s. Soon, Birdman went from being well-off to being rich. He made the jump from local businessman to a legitimate nationally-known businessman, but the battle was not over.

The late 1990s were great for Cash Money, but the label suffered major losses from 2001 until 2003. Lil Wayne, the third fiddle behind Juvenile and B.G., was the only artist signed to the label by 2004. His album, Tha Carter did enough to keep the lights on at Cash Money. His follow-up album, Tha Carter II, however, helped re-establish Cash Money Records.

Lil Wayne hit the mixtape scene during what many felt was the peak of his career. His move seemed odd to most critics, but he worked with every artist in the game and built unity. By 2007, Lil Wayne was bigger than the biggest names, despite not having an album out, nor an album in the works. In 2008, this all changed when he released Tha Carter III and built his Young Money roster. Cash Money Records was granted a second lease on life through Lil Wayne and a third through Young Money.

This year will be the first year in which both Lil Wayne and Young Money will both be very high in popularity without riding on the other for success. Birdman has taken matters upon himself to become the flagship artist for the main Cash Money label. He is currently working on his Bigger Than Life album, which is loaded with collaborations from Young Money. There are also several big names signed to Cash Money, outside of the boss, including Bow Wow.

Effortlessly, Cash Money Records will end up dominating the year of 2011 through the roster of talent signed to the primary label and the subsidiaries.

Lil Wayne has not heard "Thank Me Later" or "Pink Friday"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Despite the success Drake and Nicki Minaj had while Lil Wayne was serving prison time, Wayne has not had the chance to hear their music. Ever since he returned from prison, Lil Wayne has praised them for holding Young Money down while he was out of commission. But, Lil Wayne also says he is not surprised by the way they took over the game.

Early in the summer, Drake released Thank Me Later, his long-awaited debut album. The album was met with a positive response from critics. Fans obviously loved the album, as it was close to platinum following first-week sales. Before the end of the summer, the album had been certified platinum. Drake was considered the anchor of Young Money during this time.

Nicki Minaj rose to national fame behind her high-profile collaborations with Ludacris and Usher. The popularity of her singles helped her own debut single, "Your Love." Early in the summer of 2010, "Your Love" became a major radio hit, along with Drake's hit single, "Find Your Love." In many areas, both songs received heavy radio rotation and often played back-to-back, prompting Hip Hop Vibe's summer 2010 article "Young Money has fallen in Love." Even with all of the hype and publicity, Lil Wayne was too busy to listen to their albums.

The news may come as a surprise to fans, but Drake and Nicki Minaj are not surprised. They understand how Wayne's mind works and they are sure he will get around to hearing their albums.

Rick Ross talks 2009 50 Cent feud

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Ever since 2009, Rick Ross has been one of the biggest names in hip hop. Much of this is due to his highly-publicized beef with 50 Cent, the biggest bully in hip hop. For the first time, Rick Ross has opened up on why he decided to go after 50 Cent.

Ross said he had nothing personal against 50 Cent at the time. But, 50 was dissing everyone in the game. Each of 50 Cent's disses were getting closer and closer to him. Rick Ross felt his name would be next on the list, so he decided to go after 50 first.

Last year, Rick Ross said he would not go after 50 Cent again. After trading disses for a year, he was done. Instead, Rick Ross wanted to focus on his business career and making new connections. However, the "boss" did contemplate going after Eminem.

Rick Ross compared his feud with 50 Cent to the mob. In Ross' eyes, 50 Cent had been the boss for several years. Ross has watched enough gangster films to know the boss dies in the end. The boss is usually taken out by a newcomer in the business. In the case of 50 Cent, he was taken out by Rick Ross, who has since become the boss of the game.

During the late 1990s, Ruff Ryders was one of the hottest crews in the rap game, making hit records upon hit records. DMX was considered the toughest guy in rap and Eve was the first lady of the game. Drag-On was popular as one of the tough guys in the game, mainly because of his part with the Ruff Ryders.

Remembering Eazy-E (1963-1995)

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Dr. Dre is credited for giving gangsta rap its sound, but Eazy-E is the man who made all of this possible. Many call Eazy-E the godfather of gangsta rap. Through his Ruthless Records label, Eazy gave the world N.W.A. While the group did not stay together, they introduced the world to Dr. Dre and Ice Cube.

Had it not been for the influence of Eazy-E, Death Row Records would have never been established. Even in the middle of beef, Eazy-E found ways to profit. The feud between Eazy-E and Dr. Dre was never fully resolved, but most stories report Eazy-E had a percentage of all Death Row profits.

Sadly, Eazy-E died exactly fifteen years ago on March 26, 1995 from complications from the AIDS virus. Even his enemies came to the hospital to grieve, but Eazy never knew this. Making matters worse, he did not have the chance to fully enjoy the profits that came from his years of hard work. Today, the Hip Hop Vibe team will remember Eazy-E and all that he did for the hip hop community.

Throughout today, Eazy-E videos will be posted.

Unlike B.G. and Juvenile, he did not forgive Birdman over the contract dispute. However, rumors stated other wise and had Turk headed to Young Money. Turk decided to address these rumors upon hearing what was being said about him.

Rick Ross was not done expanding the label and he recently signed Teedra Moses to the label. Earlier this week, she discussed possibly joining the label. In an interview with VIBE, Moses listed Maybach Music as one of the labels she was considering. Later this year, Teedra Moses will release her Complex Simplicity debut album through Maybach Music.

Recently, 50 Cent discussed Drake's Grammy loss. He said he feels as if the Young Money rapper was robbed. Taking things a step farther, 50 Cent said he thinks Drake should have actually won for 'Artist of the Year.' 50 Cent went on to say, he did not think Drake would have done as well if the captain, Lil Wayne, had actually been free.
