Among the biggest surprises during the summer of 2011 was the death of Amy Winehouse. The American audience was introduced to the British singer in 2007. Her single, "Rehab," had been a hit in the United Kingdom and took over the radio waves in America during the summer of 2007.

Immediately, Amy Winehouse won over the American hip hop scene. Her first collaboration was with Jay-Z, a remix of the "Rehab" single. Nas also praised the singer, while she was alive. The two admitted they had mutual respect for their music.

Lil Wayne, Amy Winehouse's label-mate at Universal, also was a big fan. While he was recording Tha Carter IV, he came across a track he wanted Amy Winehouse to do vocals for. After going through the proper procedures, Lil Wayne expected to have Winehouse on the album, but it did not happen, for unknown reasons.

During the final recording stages of the album, Amy Winehouse unexpectedly passed away.
