Not too many people have influenced hip hop the way Russell Simmons has. First, he launches Def Jam and turns it into the premier hip hop record label. In 1997, Russell Simmons ended up selling Def Jam to what would become the Universal Music Group.

While he is no longer the head of Def Jam, Russell Simmons has remained in the hip hop industry. Simmons has served as one of hip hop's commentators. A few years ago, Russell Simmons was leading the campaign to kill the "N-word."

For years, the black community has been on a quest for equality. There are many who beleive this quest begins with having a true television outlet. BET has been around for years, but has been met with mixed reviews.

Russell Simmons has yet to make an official announcement, but there are many who have heard him express interest in creating his own television network.
