Can Red Cafe return Bad Boy Records to Prominence?

Early in its run, Bad Boy Records dominated the game. The label quickly built around The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans. Founded by Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, Bad Boy Records was quickly becoming a second-generation Def Jam. While Combs established himself a new-and-improved Russell Simmons, B.I.G. never had the chance to have a legacy like LL Cool J, as he was brutally murdered.

Bad Boy Records has had a number of hits over the past fourteen years, but the label has never had another flagship artist like their original. Immediately following Biggie's death, Mase became the new face of the label. However, during the promo run of his sophomore album, Mase decided to quit rap to become a preacher.

In 1999, Shyne became the new flagship artist for Bad Boy, but he was soon arrested and serving time in prison. Loon stepped up to the plate in 2003, but his career quickly fizzled, also. In 2009, Combs announced he had signed Red Cafe to the label. During the fall, Bad Boy Records left Atlantic Records for a new deal at Interscope Records. Diddy said Red Cafe would now be the focal point of Bad Boy Records.

Aside from being Bad Boy's new flagship artist, Red Cafe was also the head of his own Shakedown movement. Red Cafe has been working for well over five years, trying to gain exposure and release his debut album. After two years of delays, on Bad Boy, Diddy announced Red Cafe would soon be taking his rightful place as the new flagship artist of Bad Boy Records. Red Cafe also discussed the situation and announced his debut album would be released on Valentine's Day 2012.

But, for nearly ten years, Bad Boy Records has been struggling. Bad Boy Records has been struggling two years longer than the New York hip hop scene. Long before his Bad Boy days, Red Cafe was said to be the artist who would return New York to hip hop prominence. Now, he is being hailed as the man who can make the same happen for Bad Boy Records. However, Red Cafe does not have much more buzz than any of the other New York rappers in the game.

Once Red Cafe gets the Bad Boy machine behind him, will he be able to re-ignite New York hip hop and, in turn, place Bad Boy Records back on top of the game?

Red Cafe to release Bad Boy debut on Valentine's Day 2012

Two years ago, Diddy said there would be some major changes coming to Bad Boy Records. For years, Bad Boy Records had been distributed by Atlantic Records. The Atlantic years were among the roughest in Bad Boy history.

Diddy announced Bad Boy Records would be entering a new distribution deal with Interscope Records. However, the current artists signed to Bad Boy through Atlantic would stay with Atlantic. All new artists would be signed to Bad Boy through Interscope.

During the spring of 2009, Diddy announced Red Cafe had signed with Bad Boy. He also said he would have a renewed focus on his record label. Red Cafe was going to be the new flagship artist of the label and he was the only artist shifted to Interscope Records.

Over the past two years, Bad Boy Records has moved fully to Interscope Records. Red Cafe has been on the mixtape scene for years, including his years with Bad Boy Records. Now, though Red Cafe and Diddy have discussed his future with Bad Boy. Red Cafe said Diddy is finally ready to market him and his long-awaited debut album will be released on February 14, 2011.

Red Cafe said he wanted to pick a release date everyone would remember.

G. Dep still pleads Not Guilty to 1993 murder

Last year, G. Dep shocked people when he confessed to murdering a man in 1993. Seventeen years after he committed the murder, G. Dep had been signed to Bad Boy Records and had a platinum album.

When G. Dep confessed he murdered the man, even his family questioned why he confessed after so much time. G. Dep explained how the guilt had been eating at him for years. Even his ex-wife spoke on his behalf.

Now, with the case making it to trial, G. Dep decided he would plea 'Not Guilty.' G. Dep said the reason he pled 'Not Guilty' was because he only intended to rob the man. Upon attempting to rob the man, G. Dep killed him.

G. Dep said the Manhattan courts are not willing to cut him a deal. The former Bad Boy rapper would love to reach a plea deal.

SoundBoy Cartagena talks New Mixtape, Akon, and Spanglish Carta nickname

Earlier this year, SoundBoy Cartagena sat down with Hip Hop Vibe and discussed a number of topics. Nearly a year has passed since he last spoke with Hip Hop Vibe. Over the past few months, Spanish Carta has been doing his thing. Now, with the year closing out, he is preparing to show the world his new projects.

Currently, Cartagena is working on his new mixtape. Working with the Konvict Latino branch of Akon's Konvict Muzik, SoundBoy has plenty of new projects in the works. Having access to so many celebrities has benefited SoundBoy Cartagena. He has projects coming with DJ Enuff, among other people.

SoundBoy discussed these projects and many other things during his recent sit-down with Hip Hop Vibe.

How have things changed since the last time we spoke?
Oh man, tremendously. I have a hip hop orchsestra and we put an album together. Now, all the majors want to sign us and work with us. I am taking things slow because there are thirteen other guys with me, I have to make the right decision.

You have a project coming out with DJ Enuff, too?
Yeah, I have a mixtape coming out with him right now, Enuff is hosting. On the mixtape, I have Red Cafe, I am working on a record with Joell Ortiz and I am trying to get Fat Joe for the mixtape. I am coming out with new music and the mixtape is done, now it has to be mixed and put in enough drops.

Can you tell us about the Live album?
The Live album is bringing Latin music back, fused with hip hop. A salsa/hip hop movement, we're keeping it hood, but we have musicians on deck, making it creative. As far as the album, right now things are taking off. We have a 13-piece band and we recorded many of the songs live, the outcome was so official. The album is being pressed up, we have shows coming up, a Coke-A-Cola tour, the album will be on iTunes. Many people want to sign us, but with thirteen guys, I am going to take it slow.

Right now, we are working on the skits for the album. The album is done, we are preparing for the release party, as we wait for the album to be mixed. We're definitely changing the game.

How will people look back on this album ten years from now?
Oh man, we're definitely making history. Ten years from now, they'll still be rocking this album. People who love salsa and musicians, who come from New School Music, New School College. Ten years from now, we're going to change the game, change the world. I have already changed the game, everybody wants to have a band now, because of me. Look at all the big names, my homies, who want to use a band now. I brought this to their attention. Nobody is coming to the shows, because rappers don't perform anymore. It's going well, I hope to put this CD out soon. I am also putting out my mixtape. The mixtape is called Proper Spanglish and DJ Enuff will host the mixtape.

How did you get in contact with DJ Enuff?
I was with Akon at "106 & Park," I was with his crew. I was with T-Pain and Akon came through and said we had to get over to Hot 97. I got them there in 30 minutes, I brought them in my black Tahoe, I brought them to Hot 97 and I was there with Akon and DJ Enuff and Angie (Martinez), saw me. We spoke and kept it moving. We met again at the Puerto Rican Parade and I asked DJ Enuff to host my mixtape and he said "hell yeah, I'll host the mixtape." He remembered me and that's how it happen.

When did you first meet Akon?
I met Akon a couple years ago, when I first started rolling with Konvict Muzik. I used to roll with Fabolous and Paul Cain. I was in his "Diamonds" video, which is how I met Red Cafe. We became friends and I met one of my friends with Red Cafe. One thing led to another and I ended up rolling with Shakedown, from there, I met the Konvict staff, Akon and T-Pain, and I got down with them. Red Cafe went to Bad Boy, so I ended up meeting Diddy and the Bad Boy crew. I've met Keri Hilson, Busta Rhymes, Uncle Murda, I've got pictures with some of everybody.

I was on the T-Wayne tour, the tour with T-Pain and Lil Wayne. Aside from rap, I am also a drummer, so when people need a band, they can get at me.

Did your drummer background lead you to rapping?
I always rapped and I always doing music. My mom and dad were always into music. My dad was a famous musician and my mother was a dancer, she also played instruments. That's how I got all of that. I was always rapping, even before Wu-Tang made it big. When I was nine, I came out with one of those little releases. I was the local star before all these rappers came out. There were little groups, an artist here, an artist there. I was named SoundBoy because I was always around be-boping and I had a radio, I played instruments. I did so much with sound, they named me SoundBoy.

Where did the Spanglish Carta nickname come from?
They call me Sound Carta. SoundBoy was when I was younger. I released a record as Sound Cartagena to shorten the name. Then, I shortened my name to Sound Carta just to shorten the name. I rap Spanglish, so I soon began going by Spanglish Carta. There are so many "Carter" rappers, so to stick out, so I made myself into Spanglish Carta. Even Nick and Aaron, pop artists, have the Carter last name. So, I named my album Spanglish Carta. The name stuck out, so it's been Spanglish Carta ever since. It started from a song, I like that and now that's the name of my band. But, I'm still SoundBoy Cartagena.

Suge Knight goes at Diddy and talks Tupac Shakur legacy

During the 1990s, Suge Knight was on top of the world. His record label, Death Row Records, was making hit records. Even though the label was independent, they still managed to sell millions of albums.

However, by the mid-1990s, Sean Combs had launched his own label, Bad Boy Records. In the eyes of many, Bad Boy Records was the East Coast counterpart of Death Row. Because of this, there was immediate friction between Knight and Combs.

Following the deaths of Tupac and Biggie, Suge Knight and Diddy have gone through a number of changes. Diddy rose to become one of the top businessmen in the world. Suge Knight, on the other hand, has lost everything and is fighting criminal charges.

Recently, Suge Knight was caught in the street and he was asked several questions. Knight informed the people he was working on a number of movies. Suge Knight said some movies would be actual films and others would be documentaries. Due to his persona, Suge Knight said he is not like other people in the game who snitch to stay free, like Buffy (Tupac's nickname for Sean Combs).

Suge Knight said all of the people who did Tupac wrong, while he was alive, will be exposed. While he is not a snitch, Suge Knight promised to expose all of the wrongdoers.

Machine Gun Kelly disses LeBron James

Machine Gun Kelly is the biggest sensation to come out of Cleveland since LeBron James. James was the local product, who led the Cavaliers, formerly a bottom-feeding team, to five consecutive playoff appearances. After failing to win a title each season, James left the Cavaliers.

Cleveland fans were highly upset with James, their hero until this point. The All-Star forward received death threats and his jersey was burned. Despite a year passing since LeBron James left, the people in his former city are still upset. The newest artist signed to Bad Boy Records is no different.

When Machine Gun Kelly was asked about how it felt to lose LeBron James, he said he really did not like him at all. Kelly went on to say James was really a poor example of a human being. People in Cleveland "don't roll like that," said Kelly. The west boys stay true to their hometown and the heroes do not leave their town in need, he continued. This was the code Kelly assumed most Cleveland-area natives lived by until LeBron James left for the greener grasses in Miami.

Machine Gun Kelly discusses Bad Boy deal

Last week, Diddy announced his latest signing to Bad Boy Records. Early in his career, Diddy had made Bad Boy into the top hip hop record label. In the years since, however, Bad Boy Records has struggled.

In an effort to end the stagnation, Diddy decided to move the label from Atlantic Records to Interscope Records. At the time, Diddy said he was going to develop Red Cafe` focal point of the label. But, it has taken two years for things to get going.

Last year, Diddy released his final album before returning to the office full-time. Recently, he decided to sign Cleveland rapper, Machine Gun Kelly. The label has signed several pop artists before, but they have never signed a white rapper. Dr. Dre had great results when he signed Eminem in 1998.

Recently, Machine Gun Kelly discussed signing with Bad Boy Records. Diddy intends to mold his latest signing into Bad Boy's new flagship artist. Machine Gun Kelly said he is not trying to fill the shoes of the past stars of Bad Boy Records. Instead, Machine Gun Kelly is trying to build his own legacy at Bad Boy. Diddy signs Machine Gun Kelly to Bad Boy Records

In 2009, Diddy moved Bad Boy Records from Atlantic Records, their home of four years, to Interscope Records. The deal was made because Diddy was focused on expanding the label. Having been with Atlantic Records for so long, Diddy was ready for a change.

While Diddy was entering Interscope Records, 50 Cent announced his intentions on leaving the label. Diddy intended to mold Red Cafe's career while with Interscope Records. Fans have yet to hear from Red Cafe, but they have heard from Bad Boy.

Diddy intended to sign Kreayshawn to Bad Boy Records. Kreyshawn made waves, earlier this summer. However, Diddy was unable to convince her to sign with the label. Determined to expand the roster of Bad Boy, Diddy still signed a new artist.

Machine Gun Kelly, a rising artist from Cleveland, Ohio, was officially signed to Bad Boy Records, earlier today. Both Diddy and Jimmy Iovine, the head of Interscope Records, discussed the signing today. Kelly also talked about his rise. Today, Machine Gun Kelly talked about how he started literally in the basement and how his career grew to him eventually signing to Bad Boy Records.

Diddy names his Starting Five rappers

The head of Bad Boy Records, Diddy has been around many different rappers. Through his Bad Boy label, Diddy introduced the world to the likes of Biggie and Mase. Because of his high-profile job, he has had a front-row seat to the hip hop game.

Fellow producer, Swizz Beatz, recently discussed a few of his favorite rappers. Known for doing things big, Diddy recently named his top five rappers in a lineup. Using the basketball format, Diddy named his five rappers.

In an interview with DJ Absolut, Diddy said his top five rappers would be Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Fabolous, and Drake. The list was similar to Swizzy's, as he also named Ross and Drake. Diddy has worked with all of these rappers at one time.

Shyne determined to reach Jay-Z's level of success

Early in his career, Shyne was molded in the same vein as Mase by Sean Combs. Following the death of The Notorious B.I.G., the Bad Boy label needed a new flagship artist. Mase was the first artist selected, but he gave up rap for ministry. Shyne was soon recruited to rebuild Bad Boy.

Shyne was a major star early in his career because he was with the Bad Boy label. But, following his prison sentence and his falling out with Combs and Bad Boy, Shyne was left out in the cold. Soon, he aligned with Irv Gotti, who helped him release his last album, in 2004.

While seven years have passed since his last album, Shyne intends to take over the game. Realizing he is not on the same level as Jay-Z, Shyne is inspiried by this. Shyne said he is going to work until he and Jay-Z are considered equals in the rap game. Given his change in style and the rejection of some of his newer songs, Shyne has his work cut out for him.

Diddy speaks on The Notorious B.I.G.

Nineteen years ago, Diddy met The Notorious B.I.G. and the two quickly formed a partnership. Out of this partnership was born Bad Boy Records. Known by most fans as Biggie, B.I.G. took the game over. What began as simply a partnership blossomed into a friendship.

While Biggie was the star, Diddy was the businessman. Both men saw themselves dominating for years to come. In 1996, Biggie began working on his sophomore album. Early in 1997, promotion for B.I.G.'s Life After Death began. Diddy was excited and could only image what the future would hold.

Sadly, fourteen years ago, The Notorious B.I.G. was robbed of his future. Early in the morning of March 9, 1997, Biggie was fatally shot in Los Angeles. In the time since then, Diddy has had tremendous success, but he has missed his best friend every step of the way. Each year, Diddy releases a statement about his fallen friend.

Recently, Diddy spoke on the fourteenth anniversary of his best friend's death. Diddy said the day has become a celebration of what they had, instead of mourning his loss. Every year, Diddy says the radio stations in New York play several Biggie songs throughout the day. Usually, for the entire week, Biggie's music is dominating the radio and then things end up going back to normal.

Shaquille O'Neal discusses relationship with The Notorious B.I.G.

In the late 1990s, Shaquille O'Neal was literally the biggest player in the NBA. He was so big that he had ventured outside of basketball and into the hip hop world. Shaq had made friends with several big time rappers, including The Notorious B.I.G.

When Biggie rapped about Shaq, the former Orlando Magic center contacted Biggie. Soon, the two had become good friends and had recorded together. Bad Boy Records was the authority in the hip hop game and they endorsed Shaquille O'Neal.

Shaq recorded several albums in the 1990s and the Bad Boy team worked with his music. Shaq had become good friends with Biggie and was deeply hurt when he died. The night Biggie died, Shaq had the chance to party with him.

But, gearing up for his first playoff run with the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O'Neal ended up turning down the chance to party with Biggie. Early in the morning of March 9, 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. turned up dead and Shaq feels things would have been different had he been there with him. Because of his status as the king of L.A., Shaq would have had top notch security and no one would have been close enough to take a shot.

Will Rick Ross follow in Jay-Z and Diddy's footsteps?

Rick Ross pulled off a boss move when he landed an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Records. When he first came into the game, Rick Ross was nothing more than a rapper. Jay-Z helped him land a lucrative deal with Def Jam, while he was CEO.

While Jay-Z would soon step down from his executive role at Def Jam, he and Ross bonded. The two recorded together several times. Jay-Z assisted Ross on his classic "Maybach Music" song off Trilla. The song resulted in Ross launching a Maybach Music label.

Initially, Rick Ross was a part of Slip-N-Slide Records, but they let him go. Still a part of Def Jam, Rick Ross was taking advice from Jay-Z about business. Soon, he added a roster of local talent to the Maybach Music label and even some out of state talent. While Ross was building his label, his stock was increasing rapidly. Many sub-labels wanted to have him on their roster.

After conquering Goliath with his Teflon Don album, Rick Ross and Diddy became the best of friends. The two had been hanging out and Diddy hailed him as the next Biggie. Last summer, the two teamed up to form the Bugatti Boyz and have not looked back. Diddy had hopes of signing Rick Ross to Bad Boy Records, but he was also left out in the cold. Rick Ross has taken in all of the advice from Diddy and Jay-Z, as they branch out into other ventures.

In the near future, Rick Ross may find himself venturing into other products as well, as his Maybach Music imprint is expanding and at a rapid rate. With Warner Bros. Records behind him, will Rick Ross soon be joining Jay-Z and Diddy as one of the top hip hop entrepreneurs?

Rick Ross causes a Bidding War with Major Executives

In 2005, Rick Ross was picked up by Jay-Z and signed to a lucrative deal with Def Jam. Before his days with Def Jam, Ross was signed to Slip-N-Slide Records. After doing two albums with them, Jay-Z moved him off the label and over to Def Jam, solely.

Around this time, Rick Ross also established his own record label, named Maybach Music. The label's name was inspired by his collaboration with Jay-Z. Over time, Rick Ross gained popularity and took on 50 Cent.

Surprisingly, Rick Ross won the beef and has been one of the hottest rappers ever since. Rick Ross earned the respect and friendship of Diddy. For over a year, Diddy has been giving all kinds of business tips to Rick Ross.

Last year, with T.I. having label troubles and Lil Wayne behind bars, Rick Ross shined as the most-popular rapper in the South. He also expanded his record label, adding Wale to the roster. With his contract with Def Jam set to expire, Rick Ross is working on his God Forgives, I Don't album, which will be the final album of his contract. Already, other labels are lining up to sign him.

Diddy has been trying to rebuild Bad Boy Records for years and he already has Rick Ross signed to a management deal with the company. Ever since he started associating with Ross, Diddy has been trying to turn him into a new version of Biggie. If things go as planned, he will add Rick Ross to Bad Boy and make him the new face of the label, distributing his Maybach label.

Jay-Z helped give Rick Ross his start in the game and helped him with his first two albums. But, when he left his contract with Def Jam, Jay-Z forfeited the right to work directly with Rick Ross. Instead, he launched a new imprint, Roc Nation, which has taken off. With Roc Nation quickly becoming one of the most-popular new labels, Jay-Z wants to pick up where he left off with Rick Ross by adding his entire imprint.

Also, Birdman is interested in adding Rick Ross to Cash Money Records. In the 1990s, Cash Money experienced major success before falling off in the 2000s. Lil Wayne kept the label going in the 2000s, before he exploded and created Young Money. With Maybach Music set to become the next major crew, following Young Money, Birdman wants to try his hand at distributing two popular imprints.

Outside of Bad Boy Records and Cash Money Records, Warner Bros. Records is also willing to make a lucrative deal for Rick Ross to join their label. Unlike with Bad Boy and Cash Money, Rick Ross would deal directly with the executives and the major label would directly release his music. After years of hard work, Rick Ross is getting the bidding war he did not have six years ago.

G. Dep's wife Speaks Out about Murder Charge

Ever since he announced a murder over fifteen years ago, G. Dep has been the laughingstock of many hip hop websites. Even after achieving success with Bad Boy Records, he confessed to murdering someone. But, when he pled during the first court hearing, G. Dep pled 'Not Guilty.'

Despite the success he has experienced, G. Dep has had a problem with drugs. Not even the money and fame was enough to keep him clean. Things only got worse for G. Dep when he was being pressured by his label. The New York rapper hit rock bottom when he was dropped by Bad Boy.

G. Dep's wife, Crystal Sutton, recently spoke out about her estranged husband. She said all she could do was stare at her boys when she found out G. Dep had confessed to murder. Even though they are no longer together, Sutton still cares deeply for G. Dep. When asked if she felt G. Dep committed the 1993 murder, Crystal Sutton said her husband is not guilty.

Shyne explains connection between Hip Hop and Politics

Recently, Luther Campbell and Ray J have expressed interest in holding political office. In the past, 50 Cent contemplated running for mayor in Connecticut. Diddy and Jay-Z have also toyed with the idea of politics in the past.

Wyclef Jean is probably the most-notable hip hop entertainer who tried to enter politics. During Haiti's crisis, last year, some Haitians suggested he run for president. Wyclef took the words to heart and began a campaign.

Former Bad Boy rapper, Shyne, broke down the connection between hip hop and politics. Shyne said rap music is policitical and referenced Public Enemy and KRS-One. Most of their rhymes were trying to gain political attention.

G-Dep pleads 'Not Guilty' to Murder Charges

Before the end of last year, G. Dep came forward with information about a 1993 murder. Surprisingly, the former Bad Boy rapper admitted he committed the murder, himself. He confessed after getting away with the murder for seventeen years. The rapper had enjoyed world tours and hit records.

But, after holding on to that information for so long, G. Dep felt the guilt getting to him. He went to the police with the information and was taken into custody. With the trial already set up, G. Dep was brought in to make his plea. Surprisingly, the former Bad Boy rapper pleaded 'Not Guilty.'

To many people following this situation, this seems pretty strange. But, G. Dep's legal team said there was a chance that he was influenced by drugs when he committed the murder. The 'Not Guilty' plea was to give the police time to examine his confession. G. Dep said he robbed the man, John Henkel, but he was not aware that the man was suffering from gun shot wounds.

Being held without bail, G. Dep faces 25 to life in prison.

Three years ago, he grew tired of waiting and left the label. G. Dep later collaborated with fellow former Bad Boy, Loon.

While G. Dep never received much attention while he was a part of the Bad Boy family, he sure will receive plenty of attention now. The rapper recently turned himself in for murder. G. Dep has a criminal history, having been arrested 25 times. He has committed burglary and got into trouble with drugs.

Seventeen years ago, however, G. Dep brutally murdered John Henkel in the middle of a routine robbery. He shot the man three times in the chest and hid the evidence. In the time since the murder, he has gone on to become a semi-successful rapper. But, recently, the guilt got to him so G. Dep decided to turn himself in. He is currently in jail and will not be released on bail.
