Album Review: Z-Ro - "Meth"

By Hardcore Critic
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Over the past decade, critics have pointed out how the quality of hip hop music has decreased. What has been overlooked is the work ethic of several rappers. Houston rapper, Z-Ro, has been among the hardest working rappers in the game.

Z-Ro has released an album a year, or more, for the past seven years and has shown no signs of slowing down. The latest album in his drug series is Meth. The new album comes on the heels of his 2010 drug-themed release, Heroin.

With Meth, Z-Ro continues his trend of melodic flows over the Southern beats. Despite other Houston-area rappers gaining more media attention, Z-Ro cements himself as one of the best rappers from Houston, of all-time. A decade ago, rappers became comfortable with singing on their records. Many rappers continue to sing, many off-key, but not Z-Ro, as he shows he can do both at ease.

Z-Ro has anthems, such as his "H-Town Kinda" and street songs, such as the Bun B-assisted "Ro and Bun." Those songs are what keeps the album creative and shows Z-Ro's diversity as an artist. Meth is one of the best albums of 2011 and it will likely go unheard by the masses. The album is currently in stores and is well worth a listen.

Byron Amos' UGK affiliation should not hinder Current Career

By The Voice
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

The Atlanta media has been all over Byron Amos, a candidate in the Atlanta Public Schools election, after they discovered he serves as the vice president for hip hop record label, UGK Records. There are several videos on YouTube, which show UGK and their affiliates smoking and women dancing suggestively. Because Byron Amos is in a number of those videos, several teachers in Atlanta have pulled their support of him in the current Atlanta Public Schools election.

Before they discovered Byron Amos had worked with UGK, the teachers supported Amos and wanted him to take the seat. Now, after discovering his connections to the hip hop industry, they have all changed their minds. Often times, hip hop is written off as ignorant and violent. While the Atlanta teachers who have pulled their support of Bryron Scott are not violent, their reasons for pulling their support of Amos are definitely ignorant.

If Byron Amos was the right candidate before his videos were discovered, he should still be the right candidate after the videos were discovered. However, if Amos' intentions are to offer marijuana to the students and have the female students wear skimpy outfits and dance suggestively, he should not be elected. Obviously, those are not his policies, as he had support from a high percentage of the teachers, before his past was exposed.

Just like the teachers passing judgment, Byron Amos has a past. Much like everyone else, there are probably things about Amos' past he would love to change. However, life is a live and learn-style situation with no rewind or edit button. What Byron Amos did in the past should have nothing to do with his present, as he is only trying to help the Atlanta children. From the looks of things, he seems to be the only candidate actually looking out for the students.

It is obvious the people criticizing Byron Amos for being a member of UGK do not know much about the duo. While some of their lyrics are very graphic, Bun B and Pimp C (before his untimely death in 2007) were very generous philanthropists in their old neighborhoods. Despite the things they rapped about, they are positive people who try to teach children the right things about life. In their music, they explain the way they came up, never have they suggested anyone imitate them.

For decades, hip hop has gotten the bad wrap for being the genre of music that supports ignorance and violence. However, the Atlanta school board is currently supporting ignorance and predjudice without doing the proper research. UGK does have harsh lyrics, but they also have inspirational lyrics about self-betterment and giving back. But, none of their music has anything to do with Byron Amos, who was only trying to maintain his lifestyle by working with their company. He moved on and is now trying to help the children.

Royce da 5'9 speaks on Eminem being named "King of Hip Hop," and Slaughterhouse South

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Today, Hip Hop Wired caught up with Slaughterhouse member, Royce da 5'9. The Detroit rapper spoke on a number of topics. Among the topics were Eminem and him being named the "king of hip hop" by Rolling Stones.

This summer, Royce and Eminem released their collaobrative album Bad Meets Evil. While he considers Eminem his closest friend in the industry, Royce did not agree with Rolling Stones. Royce said no one should ever be named the king of anything in hip hop.

Royce da 5'9 said no one should be named king because different fans have different opinions. While many would credit Eminem as king, others would give credit to Jay-Z, Nas, or another rapper. Royce was also asked about Slaughterhouse's membership. The crew has members from all over the United States, except for the South.

When asked who he would add to Slaughterhouse from the South, Royce da 5'9 said it would have to be Bun B, because he is already an unofficial member of the group.

Album Preview: Lil Wayne - "Tha Carter IV"

By The Voice
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

There has been talk of Tha Carter IV almost immediately following the release of Tha Carter III. Lil Wayne said he wanted to release an experimental album following his triple platinum success. This album would become Rebirth, but was preceeded by his collaboration album introducing Young Money.

Tha Carter IV was initially intended to be released in 2009, but was pushed back until 2010. However, Lil Wayne had to serve a prison sentence in 2010. To hold fans over, Wayne instead delivered with another album, I Am Not a Human Being. The album featured tracks originally intended to be a part of Tha Carter IV.

Towards the end of 2010, fans received their first glimpse of Tha Carter IV with the first single, "6 Foot 7 Foot." The song marked the end of the feud between Lil Wayne and Bangladesh and was dubbed "A Milli" on steroids. "6 Foot 7 Foot" became the first true hit of 2011 and showed off Lil Wayne and Cory Gunz' lyrical ability. Even when the second single, "John (If I Die Today)" with Rick Ross, was released and became a hit, "6 Foot 7 Foot" was still dominating the radio.

If the first three singles, "6 Foot 7 Foot," "John (If I Die Today)," and "How to Love," are any indication, listeners are in store for one of the most-creative albums of the past few years. Already, there is an incredible mix of different genres placed onto one hip hop album. On each of the songs presented, Lil Wayne displays his lyrical prowess and creative abilities. Upcoming singles from the album will be the Drake-assisted single, "She Will."

Lil Wayne recruits Nas, Shyne, and Jadakiss for Posse Cut

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

With Tha Carter IV coming out in a little over a month, Lil Wayne is putting the finishing touches on his album. After doing an experimental album, an album with Young Money, and an album of leftover tracks, Lil Wayne is releasing the album he wanted out years ago. Tha Carter IV intends to pick up where his previous Carter, III, left off.

Already on the album, Lil Wayne has enlisted Busta Rhymes, Cee Lo, Tech N9ne, Bun B, John Legend, and Will.i.am. Now, several of New York's finest have been added to the track listing. Lil Wayne will be teaming up with some of the greatest rappers of all-time for a posse cut for Tha Carter IV. Teaming up with Nas, Shyne, and Jadakiss, Lil Wayne is working on a classic track.

Apologizing to the fans for delaying the album for so long, Wayne put together his Sorry 4 The Wait mixtape. The official release of the mixtape will be this Wednesday. The album will feature production from Boi-1da, Polow da Don, Swizz Beatz, and Bangladesh. Tha Carter IV will see its official release date on August 29, 2011.
