Method Man to sever ties with Marijuana

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Rappers such as Method Man and Snoop Dogg helped to pave the way for the "weed rap" sub-genre of hip hop. Both artists have been able to cross over, while still remaining true to the weed. Meth, himself, starred in the How High movie with Redman, which is about marijuana.

Method Man has almost become synonymous with marijuana smoking. Despite this, he is looking to change his image. Not helping matters is Method Man being a part of the Smoker's Club tour with Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T. Method Man is leaving the weed alone, happy to pass the torch to Wiz Khalifa.

The reason Method Man is giving up marijuana is because of his children. During his interview with VIBE, Method Man said he did not want people to automatically think of weed when they thought of him. Method Man said there is much more to him than that, but he is not entirely leaving the culture, he is simply leaving the forefront. People always assume Method Man is high, when he is not, so he is making a change.

Justin Case talks New Music, Business, and the Industry

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Much more than an artist, Justin Case does a little of everything. During the late 1990s, Justin Case recorded music for independent record labels. After a tragic incident, Justin Case left the music industry, before returning to create his own record label.

In 2000, Justin Case launched his own label and began working with Redman through Icadon. Now, eleven years later, Justin Case is one of the biggest names on the underground circuit. Having been around for years, he has several ventures going and they are all going strong.

Through his affiliation with Redman, Justin Case became big in merchandising.

Currently, Justin Case is an artist, A&R, manager, and a full-fledged businessman. Justin Case works with all the names, both big and small and now he is pushing his own music career. While pushing his career, he is still successfully running his business. For years, Justin Case has been successful in the game and now he sat down for an exclusive interview with Hip Hop Vibe.

Read the full interview below:

How far have you come from where you started to where you are at now?
Oh man, it took me ten years. I started off wanting to be an artist, but I did not know any business. But, I learned the business in seven to ten years and now things are taking off. Back then, I was just there, running around. Now, it is all business and I'm getting my stuff together. I came a long way now. I came from nothing to going all around the world. Still, I have a long way to go.

Where did the moniker, 'Dollarmentary,' come from?
Dollarmentary. My name was Stack a Dollar for years when I was on the streets. My friend gave me a book, which was named Stack a Dollar and I ended up taking that name. But, as I grew, I ended up outgrowing my name. Everybody had the word 'Stack' in their name. So, when I was putting together a DVD for myself, I decided to name myself Dollarmentary and put out my first mixtape. The name stuck.

Last year, I toured with Snoop Dogg and he inherited my name. I've called myself Dollarmentary for years and now Snoop Dogg is calling his album Doggumentary. It's all good though, I love being a trend-setter.

Can you talk about your record label?
That's another story. We got Idolize Music (with Vinny Idol) and Space Cadets. Redman sort of oversees Space Cadets, because it started off his vibe. Working with him led to me starting the company. My style changed while I was working with Redman. He helped me to calm my music down and Space Cadets has become my company and now we are worldwide. Various countries and states are following the music and we have a compilation album coming out. I put out a mixtape in 2007, when I was in Amsterdam and that release solidified the movement.

Space Cadets is down with High Times magazine, 4/20 magazine, and all the 4/20 social networks. We're down with everyone in that circuit. We also linked up with new producers and we have a team which spans from Canada down to Brooklyn. Currently, we are trying to link up with Europe, Germany, United Kingdom, and then all of the way back to the United States. We have no major machine behind us, we are independent. After this, we will be moving on to the next project.

When did you have "that feeling" when you knew you made it?
It hit a while ago, but people do not realize this life is full of up and downs. I call this the glass door, you can be so close and can see everything, but you still cannot get it. From the outside, it looks nice, but we still want to go farther. Even down to this interview, I have "that feeling." When people tell me they like my movement, it feels much better than making money. I've been doing this before I even thought rap would get me rich. I used to hustle on the streets, so I am used to having money.

Everyone thinks they can make it when their videos hit MTV. I could have been on MTV, but I decided to take another route. Many of the artists under me want to take that route, but I do things differently from the others. Sometimes, I have to watch other people's movement to see what they are really about.

What was your role with MTV a few years ago?
We had a couple of things going on with them. I never had a real deal with them, my man Rahmon Dukes, who started 'Mixtape Mondays,' hooked me up. I used to go over there and work with him up there at the offices at MTV. I have a street team in New York and we used to work right in front of the MTV offices, selling our albums, going into the building and they sent people out, so we did a show with them.

MTV taped us for a full year and we did interviews for a year. The show never really came out, but it was available online. We signed contracts and were close to making things happen. I've been trying to get copies of the work to show to potential partners, but MTV won't release it. Even the producers who filmed us don't have access to the footage.

Did that situation make you shy away from working with bigger companies?
Not really, I'm an all-forward person. I took it as an opportunity, MTV wanted to work with us. At the end of the day, I don't think it was MTV. I believe it was someone behind the scenes who blocked our run. It was someone who knew our deal with MTV is what would have put us over the top. At the end of the day, I believe MTV will release the footage. I still go all over the world doing what I do, but I love the freedom that comes with being independent. My man still works at MTV, by the way.

How many artists do you have under you and affiliated with you?
Right now, I have four official artists and through Vinny Idol, we have six groups. We have Young N.A from the Bronx and a few other rising artists. The Penthouse Boys have an album out. I'm pushing Geda. K  formerly from Roc-A-Fella Records through Memphis Bleek's Get Low Records. Geda is not signed to me, but I helped out with A&R and executive production on his album with AK Chop. His project is coming through Idolize Distrubution. Former "106 & Park" champion Big Will, from St. Louis.

Let me think of some more, we also have AK Chop, The Penthouse Boys from the Bronx, Naturally Amazing from the Bronx, DJ MoFire, who did all my past mixtapes until 2007. We have Icadon is signed to Redman's Gilla House, but he is affiliated with Idolize Music. We have Incredible Barz, Space Doggz, ABS, GBA, Young Hustle, Young Cakin, and Young Dula. The last three make up TPM, a group. We also have Young Flames, these are all young guys who are working with me. Another group we have is Pinky's Up, they're out of Brownsville, Brooklyn. Also, Myster DL.

How many independent record labels are you affiliated with?
Well, I am focusing on Idolize Music and my own Space Cadets, Icadon has his own label, called Johnny Pump Records and I help him out over there, but that is his own company.

Will you have any big names on your next release?
My next release is called Last Train to Amsterdam. I got the Coffee Brothers and I got J. Smitty from Face Mob, they work with Scarface. I got Embassy Elite and they will be on the project. They are based out of Brooklyn and they put together my last two videos. In the near future, people will be hearing a lot out of them. As of now, that is it, but there are more people, but I'm still waiting to receive their verses. Other than that, I got Redman on the Space Cadets mixtape.

Method Man discusses problems with New Artists

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

When it comes to lyrical ability, Method Man is ranked among the top. In recent years, he has been known for his partnership with Redman. But, long before teaming up with Red, Meth was the frontman of the Wu-Tang Clan. In the time since Method Man entered the game, many changes have taken place.

Over the years, trends have come and gone in the game. A few years ago, the auto-tune had taken over hip hop. T-Pain was responsible for the takeover. But, after he took a break from making music, the auto-tune went away. Recently, T-Pain announced his comeback and the other artists are ready.

As these movements have come and gone, Method Man has been watching. With the game hitting an all-time low in the opinion of critics, Method Man has offered his opinion. Like the rest of the veterans, Meth is saddened by the lack of lyrical ability. Method Man said the new artists in the game are more worried about the way they dress instead of the way they rap.

Method Man said a lot of the new rappers are more like "fashionistas."

Redman says he Almost Died

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Recently, hip hop veteran, Redman, discussed some of the worst moments of his life. While he has enjoyed a long and successful career in rap, it has not been all good for the New Jersey rapper. Red said he had a horrible experience four days after Michael Jackson died.

Much like the rest of the world, Redman was in shock over the death of the legend. At the time, he was touring in South America, and he was waiting on his next flight. While waiting, Redman had some chicken.

After eating the chicken, Redman said he got "as sick as a dog." The food did not agree with him and it gave him a headache. Red admitted he ran down a hallway in his underwear and almost jumped off a building.

Eventually, doctors came to assist Redman and he was placed on four days of bedrest with an IV hooked to him. Upon getting off, he was as good as new.

Redman disses 2011 hip hop

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Redman has been hailed by many as one of the most lyrical rappers of all-time. Despite being a member of Def Squad, he rose to fame through his partnership with Method Man. The two are respected as one of the top hip hop duos of all-time.

Rap music has been on a rapid decline, according to critics, over the past few years. Many rappers have voiced their opinion on the state of the industry. While he has held his tongue for years, Redman has finally given his opinion.

In the past, many rap songs sampled older music. But, many fans of older music and the people who created it said hip hop was unoriginal. As a result of the criticism, hip hop has focused more on original beats over the past few years.

Redman said hip hop has become anal since they stopped sampling music. He blames the ending of the sampling on the overexposure of hip hop. For years, hip hop has been in the shadows of music, but with the internet revolution, it has risen to the forefront.

Redman discusses State of New Jersey rap

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

The New Jersey hip hop scene has been under the shadow of New York hip hop ever since the start. The few New Jersey artists who have made it, blended in with the New York rap scene. Redman has always represented New Jersey, but the casual fan would mistake him for a New York rapper.

While Red has all of the love in the world for New York hip hop, he wants his own people to show up. There are only two rappers actively holding New Jersey down. Redman is one of them and the other one is Joe Budden. While Redman is enjoying the music, he thinks they need some help.

Recently, Redman posted a "Help Wanted" sign online asking of some New Jersey rappers to step their game up. Redman said there is plenty of room for more New Jersey rappers. While there are some rappers from New Jersey, the rap market there is not taken seriously and it is often merged into New York rap. Redman wants this to change and for New Jersey to be taken seriously in its own right.

Redman wants all of the New Jersey rappers out there to go ahead and get noticed to they can help put the state on the map.

Redman talks Lil' Kim vs. Nicki Minaj feud

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Everyone in the hip hop game has had something to say about the simmering feud between Lil' Kim and Nicki Minaj. Redman recently gave his take on the feud. The statement from Redman sounded similar to Ja Rule, who suggested the two collaborate. Despite what the men say, Lil' Kim wants to keep the beef.

Unlike other rappers, Redman sided in the feud. He said he has been friends with Lil' Kim for a while and she is his heart. Redman said he does not play when it comes to her. The way he sees things, Lil' Kim should diss Nicki Minaj if she is not paying homage. But, Redman said that Nicki has given her credit in the past.

Redman said Nicki Minaj gave her props then went on to steal the style Lil' Kim invented. He feels Kim should have come out and accepted the props. From there, he feels she should have reminded fans she originated the sexy female rapper style and then offer to work with Nicki Minaj. If things had been like that, the entire beef could have been avoided.

Redman officially joins the Wu Tang Clan

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

For years, Redman has associated himself with Method Man. While they made a legendary duo, Redman was a part of the Def Squad and Method Man was a part of the Wu Tang Clan. Despite two crews being involved, everyone accepted the partnership. The Def Squad has been closely affiliated with the Wu Tang Clan for years.

Recently, however, Def Squad has accepted Method Man as an official member of the crew. In return, Redman confirmed he was now an official member of the Wu Tang Clan. But, after Redman made his confirmation, several online reports denied his claims. Because of the close affiliation, Red said the Wu made things official.

However, Redman has hit back and has called the websites who denied his membership a bunch of haters. Not only is Redman saying he is in the Wu Tang Clan, but Redman said he has been a part of the Wu now for five years. Years before, he was a close associate, wearing the Wu Gear and promoting them when he did his solo projects, but he has been on for years and now plans to push things more heavily.

ICP member claims Method Man at fault for concert attack

By Mark Thomas
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

At a recent concert festival titled "The Gathering of the Juggalos," Method Man and Tila Tequila were assaulted with bottles, rocks, and many other weapons as they tried to perform. Pictures of Tila have shown her with bruises all over her body, and multiple facial cuts. Method Man was also assaulted, performing onstage with Redman. Video has surfaced of a beer bottle smashing him on the side of the face. Method Man fully intends to take legal action in the matter. Extra credit goes to both Meth and Tila for continuing to perform, even after having been struck with multiple weapons and in some cases, disgusting items.

But now Violent J, of horrorcore rap group Insane Clown Posse, the group most associated with the fans known as 'juggalos,' has come out claiming that Meth is at fault for the attack. He says that the crowd was chanting about "family," a key word in the Juggalo mindset, as they view one another as family, and that Meth then yelled back "F**k family. It's all about hip-hop." Violent J claims that this is what evoked the attacks from the fans, as initially the fan base had only made clear their intent to attack Tila when she arrived on stage. Redman was apparently unharmed.

These attacks were outright despicable. Anyone who attends a concert with their sole intent to harm anyone performing should be punished to the full extent of the law. Let's hope enough video footage can be found from this concert that those culpable are punished to the full extent. Many "Juggalos" can be found on youtube bragging about the harm they caused. I hope they are sent a message that true music fans would never demonstrate such stupidity. Go buy yourself a drink if you are at a festival and don't care for a certain act. Show some human decency.

Redman discusses Def Jam issues

Over the course of his solo career, Redman has been signed to Def Jam. Until recently, he has had nothing but good times on the label. It was during his time with Def Jam that he came to know Method Man. The bond between the two rappers led to their tag-team duo, which they refer to as Method Man & Redman. Together, they have created multiple hits.

The most recent of their hits was their 2009 album, Blackout 2. But, that album came after multiple delays from Def Jam. It is no secret that the label has changed since its heyday of the late 1990s. Early in the 2000s, Def Jam shocked the world when Jay-Z was named CEO of the entire operation. During this time, a lot of Def Jam artists expressed their displeasure with the new boss.

Redman never publicly spoke out against Jay-Z, but he was not pleased when the label hired another rapper to be the boss. Before the era of Jay-Z, Redman and the other rappers on the label had no trouble putting music out. However, in the time since Jay-Z gave up the role, it is still hard for artists not named Rick Ross or Rihanna to put any music out. For the past two years, Redman had been trying to release his next solo album, Reggie. But, the label has been seemingly working against him.

With everything going on, a lot of people felt that Redman was preparing to leave Def Jam. While he did not deny any friction with the label, Red has revealed that he has no plans of leaving anytime soon. Instead, he plans to stay around and release his album. There is no set release date, but Reggie will be coming out sometime this summer.
