Pete Rock speaks on Syl Johnson suing Jay-Z and Kanye West

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne has caught the attention of everyone. The album has proven their lasting impact on the game. Several rappers have freestyled over a number of tracks off the album. However, everyone is not impressed with their collaborative effort.

Soul singer, Syl Johnson has heard "The Joy" and he is highly upset with the song. "The Joy," which is produced by Pete Rock, uses a sample from Johnson's "Different Strokes." The sample was used without his permission. Because of this, Syl Johnson is trying to shut down the album and receive the profits.

Pete Rock broke his silence about the lawsuit and the song. He seems to be just as surprised as Syl Johnson. While he produced the song, Pete Rock said the sample was not placed until after he completed the song. The Throne claimed the sample was originally to be used for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but in the end, they decided not to use the song.

Syl Johnson was shocked to see the song appear on Watch the Throne. Pete Rock said The Throne thought they could take the sample without paying and still get away with it. He then said Syl Johnson is still alive and well, so he is no pushover.

Jay-Z and Kanye West sued over "Watch the Throne" sample

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

For a brief moment, Jay-Z and Kanye West breathed new life into hip hop, quickly becoming the focal point. During the summer, the duo released their Watch the Throne album. Their run, however, was short-lived as Lil Wayne released Tha Carter IV weeks later.

Now, Jay-Z is in the news more for Beyonce's baby bump and J. Cole than for his own work. Kanye West has faded into the background, as he continues to unleash Big Sean on the world. The Throne, however, is now back in the headlines.

Their song, "The Joy," contains a sample from soul veteran, Syl Johnson. The song uses elements of his 1967 single, "Different Strokes." Johnson filed his suit in Illinois on October 13. Lawyers for The Throne said they tried to sample the song for Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The song ended up not being used on that album, so they kept it for Watch the Throne.

Syl Johnson claimed they never contacted him about sampling the song and he wants to impound all copies of Watch the Throne. Along with stopping distribution of the album, Johnson wants to receive full accounting of sales and publishing proceeds, along with punitive damages.

T.I. remixes "Niggas in Paris," says it Will Be Heard Regardless

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Focused on regaining the spot he surrendered in 2009, T.I. has been jumping on all the hot tracks. Since he has been gone, the hip hop scene in Atlanta has a few new faces. Future, the man behind "Tony Montana," is among them. His "Magic" single had been doing well.

DJ Drama pointed T.I. in Future's direction and the "Magic (remix)" came about. Another hot song out is "Niggas in Paris," as nearly every rapper has freestyled to the track. T.I. has strong relationships with both Jay-Z and Kanye West. But, since they released their Watch the Throne, they have been distant.

T.I. is a fan of "Niggas in Paris" and has plans of remixing the track. Unlike the other artists who have gotten on the beat, Tip wants to make it an official remix. T.I. said if he is turned down, however, he will still push the track. T.I. said he played the song for Kanye West, who played it for Jay-Z, but they have not gotten back to him yet.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Earlier this week, footage of Lil Chuckee's birthday party, which he spent with his Young Money family, surfaced onto the internet. During the party, Mack Maine spoke with MTV and he said he wants Lil Chuckee to follow Lil Wayne's work ethic. In his opinion, Lil Chuckee could be another Wayne.

Already, Lil Chuckee is following in Lil Wayne's footsteps. His latest mixtape, Twap or Die, features Chuckee rapping over industry beats. YC's "Racks" was re-named "Twaps on Twaps" and he also flowed over Watch the Throne's "Niggas in Paris," renaming the track "Niggas in Hawaii."

Mack Maine said Lil Chuckee called him to inform him of his purchase of a studio. Mack was impressed by him not saying he was writing every day, but actually investing in himself and getting his own studio. Now, Mack Maine says Lil Chuckee is writing five to six songs on a daily basis.

Jay-Z is still Hip Hop's most influential Rapper

By The Voice
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

This summer, Jay-Z made a brief return to the rap game and quickly became the focal point. He was one half of Watch the Throne with Kanye West. While the duo, as The Throne, set an iTunes record, they were quickly replaced by Lil Wayne.

There had been several rumors about Watch the Throne's release date. Many felt the album had been shelved. Right when fans had given up, "Otis" was released. Within hours, the song had been sampled by Game, who dissed Jay-Z.

Following Game, several rappers began freestyling over the "Otis" track. Both veteran rappers, current stars, and newcomers flowed over the track. Once Watch the Throne was released, rappers began freestyling over the other tracks.

The biggest hip hop release of the year was Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV. However, "It's Good" has been the most-publicized track off the album. "It's Good" sticks out because Lil Wayne disses Jay-Z in his verse on the song. His diss stems from Birdman's frequent Jay-Z insults, which led to a Jay-Z swipe on "H.A.M." It does not matter if Jay-Z is in his office, or promoting an album, he is always being targeted.

Rappers of all type either want to be like him or want to diss him, or both. The biggest rapper in the game and several other big names cannot stop with the Jay-Z disses. Other rappers are not dissing Jay-Z, they are freestyling over his beats. The rappers who refrain from dissing and sampling Jay-Z are borrowing his rhyming styles and ad-libs, or simply sampling his voice.

No rapper is having a bigger influence on the game than Jay-Z.

Ron "Shaq" Hayes talks Chauncity Music Group and Chauncity TV

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Many have written off New York, as a whole. In the NBA, the New York Knicks have experienced trouble for nearly a decade. In hip hop, New York has been in ruins ever since the release of The Black Album by Jay-Z.

However, just like the New York Knicks, there are glimmers of hope on the New York hip hop scene. Among the people helping return New York to its former shine is label owner and video producer, Ron "Shaq" Hayes. As the head of Chauncity, he is making things happen.

Simultaneously, Hayes is running Chauncity Music Group and Chauncity TV. While the record label is still on the rise, the DVD series has become a major success. Ron Hayes recently sat down with Hip Hop Vibe to discuss a myraid of topics, including his nickname, the Chauncity brand and the upcoming DVD.

Read the entire interview below:

When did you first launch the Chauncity brand?
The Chauncity brand was first started in 1998.

Did you launch it alone, or was it with Devon Mack?
Yes, me and my partner launched it together.

What was the first imprint under Chauncity?
Real Talk DVD was our first project. Arliss Michaels was the CEO of Real Talk DVD and he gave us our start. At the time, Real Talk DVD was the hottest thing around.

Your work with Real Talk DVD is what led to the Chauncity DVD?
Actually, no, it didn't really. Honestly, MTV is what inspired Chauncity TV because we got tired of trying to put our own videos out there with no one playing. Frustrated, we created our own media outlet, so we could not get turned down.

How do you feel about the critics who say New York hip hop has fallen off?
Well, to be honest, I think the critics are right. I believe hip hop is all in all, in certain ways, and I believe it can be fixed. I agree 100% with the critics, everyone in New York is copycatting. There is nothing original, and this is where Chauncity TV comes into play, we're going to help bring this back.

So, you would compare current New York hip hop to the dark ages of the New York Knicks?
The two have been identical for years. However, the New York hip hop scene is not on the level the Knicks are in basketball, just yet. But, in the next couple of years, it will be. The Biggie essence is definitely there, and we're going to help bring it back.

Chauncity Music Group was launched to help fill the void?
Yes, it was. It was launched for that reason and it was also launched because our sound is different. This sound is a sound that needs to be heard. Hip pop is what we call our sound and it definitely needs to be heard and this is why Chauncity Music Group was launched.

You are currently preparing for the Vol. 2 of Chauncity DVD?
Yes.

Who will be featured on this upcoming DVD?
We have a whole bunch of features. DZ Alias Khrist, Billionz, Steel from Smif-N-Wessun, Real Eyez, she's a female artist, Duo Lide, who toured with Wu-Tang. Arliss Michaels will also be on the DVD, Uncle Murda, First Look Sessions, one of the biggest media showcase outlets for up-and-coming artists who are trying to get their name out there.

Before Chauncity, what were you doing?
I am an ex-basketball player, I played a year in Greece and I am a streetball legend.

Is this where the "Shaq" nickname comes from?
Yep, my nickname was Shaq. Everybody in Harlem, Rucker Park, they know me as Shaq.

Could you see yourself ever becoming a sports commentator, or something of that nature?
It's funny you'd ask me that because I did that in college. I do see myself as a basketball analyst in the future.

What did you think about The Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West's) Watch the Throne?
I think Watch the Throne is a hot album, it's different. It's something which shows their talents on other levels, it shows a different side of them. I loved the marketing and promotion and it is a very inspirational album. If you are trying to get into album, deep, it is your blueprint. It does not have that bounce shit, it is something different for the listeners.

Do you have any shoutouts?
Chauncity movement, Billionz, Devon Mack, Hip Hop Vibe for the interview.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

One of the breakout stars of 2011 has been Virginia producer, Lex Luger. Among the people he has produced for is The Throne, along with Gucci Mane, and others. Lex Luger was behind the first single off Watch the Throne, "H.A.M."

Discussing the production of the song, Lex Luger said he was left in the dark. Just like the fans, he did not hear the song until it was released. While Lex did not meet Jay-Z, he did end up working with Kanye West.

Lex Luger described Kanye West as a perfectionist and says their work went well beyond the beat of "H.A.M." The two even had a conversation about beat production, which lasted for several hours. Their conversation took place over the phone and Lex Luger was a little surprised when he realized it was Kanye West. For the first thirty minutes, Lex did not even realize he was speaking to Kanye. While initially, he was not very trusting, Lex Luger became comfortable and eventually "H.A.M." was born.

Jay-Z facing more Business Troubles

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

In the wake of his recent news, Jay-Z is likely thinking back to his 1998 track, "A Week Ago," with Too $hort. A little over a week ago, Jay-Z was on top of the world. Recently, he returned to music and his album with Kanye West topped the charts. Around the same time, Jay-Z celebrated news of him becoming a father in the near future.

In the time since his performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, things have been going downhill for Jay-Z. His 40/40 nightclub is currently facing a lawsuit in Las Vegas. The recent release of Tha Carter IV has knocked Watch the Throne off the top of the charts, as well.

Those two stories pale in comparison to what Jay-Z is facing ahead, regarding his realty company. Fox News reported Jay-Z's company has been forcing people out of their homes. The Jay-Z-owned company is harrassing people out of their homes, using a number of tactics. Among the tactics are suing the people, using threats, and giving their numbers out to local realtors.

Fifteen tenants have reportedly moved out since May.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Currently, hip hop is in a very competitive mode. Almost everyone is taking shots at someone. At the forefront is Lil Wayne, with the shots he took at Jay-Z and Beyonce. Other than Wayne, there is the feud between Young Jeezy and Rick Ross, among other situations.

After being out of the spotlight for some time, Lupe Fiasco made a triumphant comeback, earlier this year. His "Out of My Head" collaboration, with Trey Songz, became the summer anthem. The overall Lasers album was met with mixed reviews. Despite the mixed reviews, many credit Lupe Fiasco as one of the best.

Lupe Fiasco is among the many who credit himself as the best. The hip hop scene is buzzing, with new albums from Jay-Z and Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Game, Ace Hood, and others. Recently, Lupe Fiasco freestyled and called himself the best in the freestyle, dissing Watch the Throne and Tha Carter IV.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

When Lil Wayne finally prepared to release Tha Carter IV, everyone knew it was going to top the charts. The question was by how much and if Wayne could top Tha Carter III. Along the way, a number of fireworks have been sparked.

Days before the release of Tha Carter IV, "It's Good" leaked, featuring Jadakiss and Drake. Lil Wayne rapped the final verse of the song. In his verse, Lil Wayne dissed Jay-Z, responding to his "baby money" diss on "H.A.M."

Hip hop fans have been wondering what would happen next between Lil Wayne and Jay-Z. More than likely, Jay-Z will not entertain the feud. However, Lil Wayne has managed to beat Jay-Z in the numbers game. In only four days of being available, Tha Carter IV has already sold 300,000 copies, becoming an iTunes record.

With this, the projections of the album have boosted again, now the album is projected to sell nearly 1 million copies in its first week. Previously, the iTunes record was held by Jay-Z and Kanye West with their new album, Watch the Throne. In a mere two weeks, their album has been topped by Lil Wayne's latest opus.

Drake speaks on "Take Care" conception, "Watch the Throne," and Possible Projects with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Time is winding down for Drake and his sophomore album, Take Care. Recently, the Young Money rapper discussed his upcoming project with Entertainment Weekly. During the interview, Drake discussed how weird it is that fans want a new project only one year after his debut.

Giving the fans what they want, Drake said he is drawing inspiration from his experiences since his debut album released. Among the people Drake is working with on his album is Stevie Wonder. This, obviously, is the biggest collaboration of his career. Working with the legend will only show Drake's growth.

Aside from his own album, Drake admitted he did enjoy Watch the Throne, despite his verse on "It's Good." When asked about the marketing of Watch the Throne, Drake said he does not think Jay-Z would have allowed a digital release of his own solo album. Nor does Drake believe Jay-Z would have allowed listeners for his own solo album.

Excited about his own project, Drake has been working very closely with Lil Wayne. Last year, the duo announced they would be putting together a collaborative album. Before they had the chance to record, though, Jay-Z and Kanye West announced Watch the Throne. Drake sent light jabs towards the duo, before showing love. Even though a year has passed, Drake said the project with Lil Wayne is still on the way.

Drake also said he will likely join Rick Ross in the studio for their own collaborative project. This year, the two have recorded several songs together. Last year, Drake and Rick Ross teamed up for "Aston Martin Music." Earlier this year, the two collaborated on "Made Men." The chemistry between the two, from a musical standpoint, is there and Drake said he would not mind doing music with him.

Game speaks on "The R.E.D. Album," Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

This week, Game will finally release his long-awaited album, The R.E.D. Album. Initially, the album was set for a 2009 release date. However, delays and an impromptu reunion with Dr. Dre completely changed the landscape.

Now, two years later, The R.E.D. Album is finally here and Game cannot be happier. Speaking on the album, the superstar said his album is the best of 2011. After hearing the Watch the Throne album, Game said his album is better.

Game will be releasing his album on the same day as his frequent collaborator, Lil Wayne. Being close to his recordings, Game said Tha Carter IV will also be a great album. While he has heard some of the album, Game said he cannot wait to hear the final product of the upcoming album.

Speaking on Lil Wayne, Game said he was like a brother to him. Game also stated he is still considering leaving Interscope Records for Cash Money Records. Following his next album after R.E.D., Game is a free agent. A few months ago, Game announced he would likely sign to Cash Money Records. Game also said he has love for the entire crew from Birdman and Slim to Nicki Minaj and Drake to Tyga. Game said he was proud of Tyga for helping revive the West Coast.

When asked if he could record his own version of Watch the Throne, Game said he would only record that type of album if he could do it with Snoop Dogg. Throughout his career, the only person Game could always count on Snoop Dogg. If Game were to be involved in a West Coast version of Watch the Throne, he said he would definitely work with Snoop Dogg on it. While Dr. Dre has received credit as Game's mentor, Snoop Dogg has also been a major help for him, too.
